Mónica Mendoza Reyes, a third-generation member of the family-owned coffee farm La Reforma from San Juan Juquila Vijanos, a community located in the remote mountanious San Isidro Reforma, Oaxaca (Mexico).
From a young age, Mónica’s mother involved her in the daily maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvesting activities of their farm. Monica states: “Traditionally, La Reforma’s farming practices were simple, focusing on cleaning, replanting, and pruning. However, we’ve since implemented more advanced care techniques, from planting to post-harvest. We’ve established our own nurseries, greenhouses, and organic fertilizer production (bocashi). We plant on contour lines and are diversifying our shade trees with native and fruit-bearing species.”
Their main coffee varieties are Typica and Mondo Novo, but after the 2012 rust outbreak, they began renewing crops with rust-resistant varieties like Marsellesa, Costa Rica, and Geisha. This year, Monica is testing the Java variety in their nursery, hoping it performs well in high-altitude areas, change is noticeable in her words: “Unlike our grandparents, who used to mix Typica and Mondo Novo in their plots, we’re now separating them into distinct sections to facilitate variety-specific harvesting.”
