Located in the rare coffee-region of San Andres de los Gama, Finca La Ilusion sits at the edge of the Nevado de Toluca. At an elevation of 2100 meters, producer Federico Barrueta utilizes the mineral-dense volcanic soil and handpicked harvesting to craft extraordinary profiles. Federico’s return to the family farm in 2003 marked a turning point for Mexican coffee, blending ancestral knowledge with a sharp modern wit for experimental processing.
His consistent dominance in the Cup of Excellence – including a 2nd place finish in 2018 and subsequent 4th place rankings in 2019 and 2021- has solidified his status as a master of his craft. With three Presidential Awards for scoring over 90 points, Barrueta’s coffees are celebrated for their complexity and elegance, proving that with passion and precision, great coffee can emerge from the most unexpected regions.
